it is necessary, Middle Irish is eidir, it is possible, for is ed fhétir, it is what is possible. feudar is the pres. pass. of feud, may. In Gaelic the "may" has become "must". The negative, cha 'n fheudar, is common in Early Irish as ni fhétir, ni étir, cannot be.
